Rangers loanee explains role Man United legend played in Ibrox exit

Rangers midfielder Stephen Kelly has discussed the influence on Manchester United legend Paul Scholes on his loan move to Salford City after a phone call from the Old Trafford icon selling him on the EFL side.

Scholes is one of a number of ex-United stars to own Salford and phoned Kelly ahead of his move to the Ammies being confirmed, helping Kelly make up his mind to make the move.

The Rangers midfielder has been unable to force his way into the first-team this season after loan spells at Ayr United and Ross County – with his stint south of the border crucial for his long-term hopes of making the grade at Ibrox.

Kelly admits the call from Scholes helped make his mind up as the Rangers Academy graduate looks to make his mark at Salford.

“I had already spoken to the manager and I got a good feel for the club from him,” Kelly said [Scottish Sun].

“I also had a chat with the director of football, and then I got a call from Paul Scholes. That was really good of him.

“The manager told me they had done their homework on me and they had watched a lot of videos of me playing.

“They felt they needed a player like me because they didn’t have anyone like that in their squad.

“Paul said the same thing when I spoke to him.

“Any player will tell you, when you hear that from a manager, that he really wants you to play for his team then it’s great for your confidence.

“So my mind was made up pretty quickly after that.”

Kelly could make his debut for his new side this afternoon when they make the trip to face Bradford in League Two.

With only two points separating the sides in the table, Kelly’s arrival could help spark a run of form that helps Salford shoot up the table and put themselves in contention for a playoff place.

Meanwhile, another promising homegrown talent made a good contribution for his loan club on Friday night.
