Rangers B made it nine wins from ten games in the Lowland League yesterday, beating league leaders Bonnyrigg Rose 5-2 at New Dundas Park – and head coach David McCallum was full of praise for his players after they had to dig deed to earn the three points in front of a bumper crowd of 948.

Goals from Tony Weston, Robbie Ure, Charlie McCann, Kane Ritchie-Hosler and Cole McKinnon saw the Light Blues head back across the M8 sitting only one point behind Rose in the table with two games in hand, after a thoroughly entertaining game between the two sides.

Despite the scoreline looking comfortable, the Gers had keeper Jay Hogarth to thank after a string of outstanding saves to deny Rose as they tried to find a way back into the game and McCallum was particularly impressed with how his Rangers Colts defended.

“We had to fight for our lives to defend at times together,” McCallum told Rangers TV.

“I think that this season, in all the games we’ve played, that’s been the most we’ve had to defend. I know the scoreline looks really strong in terms of being 5-2, but we’ve been really clinical in an attacking sense. I have to say we’re talking about the centre-backs, we’re talking about the goalkeeper who had to make some really top saves at important moments.

“Our midfield has had to come back to get second and third balls. We’ve had to really defend properly today which is not something they’ve had to do as often within the same game. So really pleased. Really pleased with the performance, really pleased with the defensive performance and I think we deserved to win it – but I think we’ve earned that.”

The Light Blues have made a fantastic start to the Lowland League season and yesterday’s win can only help strengthen their title credentials with ten games played.

McCallum’s side will face an even tougher test on Tuesday when they face Championship side Ayr United in the SPFL Trust Trophy as they look to book their place in the next round.
